News You Should Know: Election Results, Food Pantry Hours, and HHC Free Admission

It’s Thursday, and here are some of the things you need to know. 

Antisemitic graffiti was found in downtown Cincinnati, scrawled across sidewalks. Its content contained misinformation about the Israel-Hamas war. 

The Jewish Family Service Heldman Family Food Pantry at the Barbash Family Vital Support Center announced that it has expanded its hours in response to the suspension of SNAP benefits. Now staying open on Tuesdays and Thursdays 2 – 4 p.m., and Wednesdays 4 – 6 p.m. 

Election Results

Jewish City Council member Mark Jeffreys won re-election and will retain his seat. Another Jewish candidate, Aaron Wiener, did not receive enough votes to secure one of the nine seats on Cincinnati City Council, which are awarded to the top nine vote-getters.

Mayor Aftab Pureval soundly defeated challenger Cory Bowman for a second term.

At the Mayerson JCC, Whitney Fisch has been named the J’s Chief Program Officer. Fisch was formerly the executive director of Miami Hillel and CEO of BaMidbar. David Solomon is now the J’s Chief Operating Officer. Ellen Daniel has been promoted to Chief Marketing Officer and Director of Development. 

Special Events

The Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center is offering free admission on Sunday, Nov. 9, in commemoration of the 87th Anniversary of Kristallnacht. The day will also include special events with stories from survivors. The free admission day does not include the Auschwitz Exhibit.
