The history of Mah Jongg is deeply intertwined with the Jewish community,
particularly in the United States. The game, which originated in China, was
brought to America by Joseph Babcock in the early 20th century. Babcock
changed the numbers on the tiles to numerals familiar to Americans and
introduced Mah Jongg to the American market. Come learn Mah Jongg’s evolution
from a Chinese gambling game to a symbol of Jewish American identity and the
game’s enduring cultural significance.
