Tuesdays with Torah | Jews and Booze: Making Kiddush During Prohibition
Presented by: Rabbi Zachary Goodman
What happens when religious ritual meets federal law? During America’s
Prohibition era (1920–1933), Jewish communities found creative—and sometimes
controversial—ways to keep making Kiddush while the country went dry. In this
three-part class, we’ll explore the surprising intersection of Jewish
tradition, bootlegging, and the 18th Amendment. We’ll look at how rabbis,
congregations, and kosher wineries navigated a time of legal tension and moral
debate, and what it reveals about Jewish resilience, religious freedom, and
the American Jewish experience.
