K.K. Bene Israel/Rockdale Temple is pleased to announce RockArt! on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30pm, beginning in the Heldman Social Hall. Led by congregant Abby Schwartz, former director and curator of the Skirball Museum of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, this community-wide event offers participants to get up close and personal with Rockdale’s amazing collection of art and artifacts.
During the congregation’s Bicentennial, celebrated in 2024, Schwartz was tasked with making an inventory of the congregation’s art and artifacts collection. Some of the objects provide a window into the 200-year history of this historic congregation. The process of culling and researching the collections resulted in an illustrated guide which will be available for all attendees.
The evening will begin with a brief, illustrated overview by Schwartz over desserts and beverages, followed by self-touring inside and outside the building with the artists and donors who made many of our treasures a reality. A recent addition to the collection is a suite of mosaics made by local artist Suzanne Fisher that honors the teaching and wisdom that women have shared from one generation to the next. Titled The Torah of Women, the five mosaic panels are dedicated in memory of Rockale Temple’s Senior Rabbi of blessed memory, Rabbi Sigma Faye Coran (March 23, 1966-May 8, 2020), by her family.
This special evening will be a springboard to additional programming around this collection, including public tour opportunities for civic, social, and religious groups throughout the greater Cincinnati region.
