Congressman Greg Landsman is the latest Democrat to call on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 Presidential race.
In a statement released today on X, formerly known as Twitter, Landsman praised Biden for saving the United States democracy in 2020 and his service as president but said “after hundreds of conversations with constituents,” he does not believe he can win in November.
Landsman is one of the many democrats since Biden’s disastrous debate performance and slips at press conferences and interviews to leave the 2024 race.
“It is time for President Biden to step aside and allow us to nominate a new leader who can reliably and consistently make the case against Donald Trump and make the case for the future of America,” Landsman said.
President Biden has resisted calls for him to leave the race and has vowed to continue. Senior Democrats are concerned he won’t be able to convince voters he’s capable of handling the job for another four years, with polls indicating he’s losing support in key swing states. The number of leaders in his own party calling on him to step down has continued to increase.
Landsman’s call for Biden to leave the race comes days after Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance was named as former President and convicted felon Donald Trump’s running mate.
The congressman has been a vocal critic of Trump, calling him a threat to American democracy.
“We cannot allow Donald Trump and the rise of fascism and authoritarianism to take root in America,” Landsman said. “To allow Trump to become president and control all three branches of government puts our democracy and freedoms at great risk.”
